Curatorial Rational:
My vision for presenting this body of work, was to create a unified body that provided a window into the inner working of my mind, letting the beholder peek into my mind and see my morals, my stand on contemporary issues and just who I am as a person. Many times I want to show my standings on particular issues that interest me, many times this pushes to try to get as much information across as possible, hence influencing the mediums I use because, I portray this information through the details. For example, on a piece you have or will see behind me I used Photoshop to make a parrot out of pictures of flora and fauna of Puerto Rico. Through this piece I wanted to show my stance on the debate of if “El Yunque” National Forest should be opened up for private investment/development to boost the economy of the island. Using digital manipulation to create the piece allowed me to add a level of detail that I couldn’t have added if I was using a method like block printing for example. There are a couple of themes that can be found in many of my works. The two that are most prominent are social commentary and environmental activism. There are many problems with our society that we can easily identify, this is why I like to make this sort of pieces, we all want to make our society better even if we have different ideas of how we get there or what the outcome is. So, this is just my way of showing my opinions on it. Now, the reason I make pieces about protecting the environment is just because I understand that how we treat our environment now will have effects on us later and I just want to spread the word. Even though I like to add a lot of detail to my pieces, I add a central object that is easily recognizable and can easily be tied back to the topic of the piece. I also make sure not to overload a piece, if the point I’m trying to make is to extensive I’ll make the piece a series, or a triptych. To connect the piece to the viewer I try to use objects that people can easily associate with, and when I use people, I make sure that they can easily be identified as being in a certain position. For example, one of the first pieces that showed up behind me was a block print, in this block print I had a king. I made sure he was easily recognizable as being a king so that people could easily form a connection with the piece. I arranged this pieces so that the first pieces are the ones that the first ones that show up first are my positions on issues and the ones towards the end are pieces in which I describe different aspects of my personality and just me as a person. I did this so that it would be that the longer you watch the slideshow for, the more extensive and meaningful things the beholder can see.
